***DEC 23/07 Website news & Season's Greetings from the webmaster***
First I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member of the AirlineHobby.com slide auction community a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2008!
This past year has been a good one for the aircraft slide collecting hobby. In 2007 we welcomed more new members to the website than in recent years, and for those of you who attended the FRA show this past November, we can all attest that interest in collecting aircraft slides has not abated one bit in the face of increasing interest in digital photography. Here are a few photos (including some familiar faces) from the FRA 2007 slide convention. Notice the frantic slide trading activity in the FRA convention room!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/12382727@N07/sets/72157603524094523/
Given that some members within our ranks do take digital aircraft photos, I would like to encourage you all to upload your digital aircraft photos to our new sister photo gallery website http://www.AirlineFan.com which has grown to 8500 photos since the site’s launch on May 11, 2007. For those of you that are not aware, the http://www.AirlineFan.com site is unique among photo gallery sites in that it provides photographers with the highest cash payouts for sold photographs (compared to all the other aviation photo gallery sites). A number of our members have already earned significant revenues from their print sales, and the site is still very much in its early days, so this is the perfect time to start uploading your airline and military aircraft images.
We recently added a useful new feature to the website.
Site users can now hide from view auctions listed on the sold and bought items pages within My Account.
Slide sellers can now easily hide from view sold auctions on the "View your sold items with bidder contact info" page using the new check-boxes beside the respective auctions. If an auction is hidden from view by mistake, don't worry, the "Show hidden items only" check-box allows for hidden items to be shown again. This new feature allows slide sellers to better manage their sold slides.
Slide buyers can now easily hide from view their bought slides on the "View your buying history with seller contact info" page using the new check-boxes beside the respective auctions. If a bought slide is hidden from view by mistake, don't worry, the "Show hidden items only" check-box allows for hidden items to be shown again. This new feature allows slide buyers to better manage their bought slides.
In other news, our partner www.AirlineFan.com Press is planning to enter the airline photo book publishing business in 2008, offering high quality soft-cover airline photo books, at very reasonable prices. The books will be produced off-shore, and will be self-distributed thus removing many of the middlemen and cost mark-ups, which will result in cost savings and a much lower end price for you, our valuable customers.
Our very first book title will be of special interest to many AirlineHobby.com members, and is of special personal interest to the webmaster too. It will be titled “Commercial Airliners – The Art of Air-to-Air Photography.” This 144 page all-colour photo book will be bursting with eye-popping air-to-air airliner images the likes that have never been published before.
It is anticipated that this amazing book will be published in mid-2008. Only 1000 copies will be printed, so it will become a sought after book which should sell out quickly. Order details will be provided in due course.
On the DVD front, we have recently released two brand new DVDs that are now available for immediate shipment:
Honeywell Boeing 720 Air-to-Air photo shoot NEW DVD!
This is the first of several DVDs that are planned in follow-up to our visit with Honeywell's Boeing 720 operation in February, 2007. This is truly a must-have DVD for all Boeing 707 fans, and this is the first and only DVD in worldwide existence that is devoted entirely to the Boeing 720!
To order and watch the online video clip click here, but be sure to turn up your speaker volume for this one!

American Airlines DC-3 NEW DVD!
On September 14, 2007, the Flagship Detroit Foundation's lovingly restored American Airlines DC-3 NC17334 made a first-time visit to Vancouver International Airport as part of an America Airlines sponsored tour of their west coast stations.
This pristine DC-3 operated a pleasure flight up the scenic BC coast via Howe Sound, which culminated in a fly-past over North Vancouver, the city center, and the airport. Airline videographer Henry Tenby captured this amazing visit on video, and this DVD presents spectacular footage from the flight-deck, cabin and exterior. This is a must-have DVD for any serious propliner fan!

In closing, I send everyone Season’s Greetings and best wishes for 2008!

***New page explaining website selling methods***
We have created this new page to clearly explain the three different selling methods available on the site for all site members:
Selling Methods page
This page explains differences between the three methods and the basics on how to employ the three sales methods.
In addition to auctions (Method 1) and fixed price long-term SuperStore listings (Method 3), this page also explains the fixed price short-term selling of multiple quantity listings within the auction side of the site (Method 2) as very successfully employed in the Exavia New Arrivals catagory.
Method 2 is perfect for bulk slide sellers selling hot new slides (multiple quantities with a single listing) at fixed prices within the auction side of the website, with a maximum listing duration of 21 days.

***George Tsialtas (Macair727) removed from site***
Please be advised that site member George Tsialtas (Macair727) of Greece has been permanently removed from the website, and his name is now permanently listed on our Delinquent Members page:
Delinquent/Cancelled members page
Over the past several months, this irresponsible individual has left upwards of $1000 of slides unpaid auction slides.
Effected sellers are instructed to post negative feedbacks and process fee refunds.
Sellers with unpaid auctions from this individual that are older than 90 days, will not be able to process fee refunds through the website fee refund system. Please contact the webmaster who will manually process fee refunds as required.
The webmaster is sorry that we sometimes have to root out bad apples like this, but all we can do is protect everyone from this point forward.

***Changes to Proxy Bidding System***
The website's proxy bidding system has recently been overhauled. We have changed how the system handles matching maximum proxy bids for a given auction.
If a current high bidder has a $10 proxy bid in place on a given auction, and an active bidder also places a $10 bid, the system will no longer give the message "your bid amount is the same as the current high bidder" to the active bidder.
In this situation, the current high bidder's $10 proxy bid will take precedence over the active bidder's $10 bid, as the current high bidder placed his $10 bid first. The active bidder will be informed that he has been outbid. The current high bidder will win the auction for $10 so long as no higher bids are placed.
For more indepth information on the revised proxy bidding system please click here.

***AirlineFan.com -- Airline photo gallery website***
This is an important news flash going to all AirlineHobby.com members
After 16 months of programming, our brand new sister website www.AirlineFan.com has just launched, and you are invited to join in the action!
The newly launched www.AirlineFan.com site is an airline photo gallery which offers airline photographers the very best photo monetization opportunity for their photos available anywhere. We also heard a common complaint from many digital photographers that the other gallery site rejects many excellent photos, for the most unreasonable of reasons. That will never be a problem at www.AirlineFan.com
and I personally invite you to upload your airline digital shots to the site. We also need photo screeners, and those interested can apply from the links on the lower homepage.
Unlike other airliner photo gallery websites where photographers get paid peanuts when someone buys a print from one of their images, www.AirlineFan.com offers a unique business model that tracks and rewards airline photographers for their work, with the highest airline photographer cash payouts.
Here's how it works:
Photographers can offer 4X6 glossy photos of their image uploads for sale to site viewers. We handle the entire print sale process. Our system keeps track of your revenues.
If someone orders a 4X6 print from the AirlineFan website, the price we charge the purchaser is $2 US per print. (Other print sizes may be offered in the future.) A well known competitor website charges a measly 70 cents for the same 4X6 print, and we think this is a gross undervaluation of your work. Serious airline photographers deserve to be properly compensated for their efforts. If you're listing your digital airline photos elsewhere, you've been selling yourself short, and we can now offer you a fair and immediate solution.
We split the $1.70 profit per print sale on a 50/50 basis with our Executive Class members. This means you will earn $.85 each time someone buys a 4X6 print from one of your photos. Simply put, that's more than twice what our competitor will pay you! Economy Class members earn $.65 for each 4X6 photo.
The key is to only upload your superb digi airline pics to the www.AirlineFan.com site. If you upload the same photos to other image gallery websites, any potential photo customers will purchase elsewhere, resulting in less revenue for you the photographer.
The website is loaded with other neat features, and I keenly look forward to seeing your work on the site. |

***AirlineTV.net -- Flash airline videoshare website***
The www.AirlineTV.net website is the world's first FLV Flash powered airline videoshare website, powered by user video content. It works just like YouTube, but is geared for airline fans.
There are some fantastic Honeywell Boeing 720 clips filmed just two weeks ago in Arizona. You can see these clips on the home page. I personally invite you to sit back and enjoy the airline content. Watch at your convenience.
You're also invited to start uploading your own airline video content to share with other site viewers and friends.
Uploading your video content is quick and easy, and instructions are available on the website:
www.AirlineTV.net/help.php
The www.AirlineTV.net website is now live and broadcasting to the world. Please tell your friends, and I hope to see your video content on the site soon!

***PayPal problems for German/European sellers***
For the past few months PayPal has not been able to process instant payments for account fees for German and some other European sellers who wish to pay their fees using our automated payment system within My Account.
It is not known if or when PayPal will fix the problem.
Sellers are kindly asked to not send fee payments by the manual PayPal method to the webmaster.
German and other European sellers that experience this PayPal problem are kindly requested to pay their fees by credit card by clicking on the credit card link within My Account. All credit card payments are processed on secure digital certificate pages that are fully encrypted. For your security, we do not store any credit card data in our database. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

***Military commission rate reduced to 7%***
Effective immediately the military commission rate has been reduced back down to 7%.
|
| Date: 06/13/2006 |
***New changes to website fees***
Effective immediately the following fee changes will take effect:
1) The listing fee will be reduced to 5 cents from the current 10 cents
2) The commission for military aircraft slide sales will be increased from 7% to 10% (in matching with the rest of the website).
3) As a further incentive for sellers, expired auctions can now be re-listed as fixed-price Slide SuperStore listings for free.
This means no listing fee will be charged when expired auctions are re-listed for up to one year as Slide Super Store listings. Sellers will notice a new button at the top of expired auction pages, which must be used to re-list the expired listing into a fixed price Super Store category without incurring a listing fee. Hopefully sellers will consider re-listing their unsold auctions for fixed price sale, given there is no cost and it takes just a few easy clicks.
Fresh listings into the Super Store and auctions re-lists will incur regular listing fees and all successful website sales are subject to the commission fees.

***Brand New Forum now open***
The brand new forum is now available for everyone to use:
http://www.airlinehobby.com/forum/default.asp
Here is the place to do the following:
1) Post news about upcoming aircraft slide conventions and collectible shows
2) Discuss aviation photography, cameras and film related matters
3) Post trip reports and ask other members about photography at airports worldwide (members can include photos in their posts)
4) Discuss aircraft, registration, fleet, routes, deliveries and manufacturer news
5) Holiday Notice Board allows members to tell other members about their holiday absences from the website
The forum operates with its own separate database, but it only takes a few seconds to create your account to post messages on the forum. Site members are advised to create their accounts using their same nickname as used on the AirlineHobby.com website database.
Hopefully the AirlineHobby.com Forum will become an active and interesting place where site members can share hobby related information with each other. Please remember, that commercial notices (offering goods for sale) are not permitted.

***Change in Invoices to Sellers***
Effective today, a back-end software change was made to how sellers’ invoices are generated. This change was necessary to correct several invoicing related bugs that were brought to the webmaster's attention over the past few weeks.
Starting today, the listing fee will be charged to the seller's account at the time of listing, instead of at the time of closing. The confirmation email sent at time of listing will now include details of the listing fee, and the updated account balance.
When the listing closes, the final value commission fee and all other applicable non-listing fees (front page fee, secondary category fee, banner fee, featured item fee, bold title fee etc) will be charged to the seller's account.
Some sellers may notice that they might not be charged listing fees at all for the next week or two. This is only a temporary situation, as listings that were listed prior to today that have not yet closed will not get charged listings fees upon closing.
This is due to the new code, which now charges the fee upon initial listing. As these active auctions have already been listed, we cannot go back and retroactively charge the listing fee. Therefore, these interim listings will not get charged listing fees at all.

Simply log into My Account and click on the new link "View your buying history with seller contact info" under Auction Management Tools - Buying (lower right side of the My Account page).
So if you ever delete or lose your congratulations email, all the information you need about how to contact your sellers is available online with one easy click!

***10 cent Listing Fee for Military Auctions***
Military aircraft slide sellers are advised that the new 10 cent listing and re-listing fee will apply to slides listed in the military aircraft auction categories commencing on Febraury 7, 2006.
As such, all invoices issued from February 7, 2006, onwards, will reflect the 10 cent listing and re-listing fee.
This is due to the recent announcement of the same fee being implemented by our competitor on February 1.

***Shutter Kings & Hot Auctions Features***
Three new features have just been added to the website:
1) Shutter Kings page
Every site member that completes their "About Me" page is now featured in the new “Shutter Kings” page, which is now on the menu bar and accessible from all pages on the website. The "About Me" page allows each site member to tell the world about their aviation photography and slide collecting interests. If you are looking for slide trading partners or would like to create a webpage showcasing your aviation photo background, here is your chance. You can use html and it costs nothing! We have over 1300 active site members, and only 40 site members have completed their "About Me" pages. There are more than 1200 AirlineHobby members who are keenly encouraged to complete their "About Me" pages.. and join the ranks of the AirlineHobby.com Shutter Kings!
2) Hot Auctions Page
The new "Hot Auctions" page showcases all the active "Hot Auctions" on the website in one location. An auction must have four bids in order to be considered a "Hot Auction" and appear on this page. (The “Hot Auction” requirement was recently reduced from 7 bids down to 4 bids.)
3) Remove Item from Invoice
Sellers can now permanently remove items from appearing on their invoices to buyers. The Invoice Page now has a new "Remove and Recalculate" button. Any item that is check-marked will be permanently removed from all future invoices when this button is clicked.

| Date: 12/08/2005 |
***New 10 cent listing fee***
One of the most frequent complaints made to the webmaster is the increasing number of re-listed un-sold slides, which appear on the website over and over again.
This activity is unproductive for everyone. It consumes server resources which slows down the operation of the website, and some site members find it quite overwhelming.
In keeping pace with industry leaders of the online auction industry, a new listing fee of 10 cents per listing (and re-listings) will commence with all invoices issued from January 1, 2006 onwards. This nominal fee will help lessen the above problem.
By comparison to the rest of the industry, this nominal 10 cent fee is extremely reasonable. The online auction industry leader charges $1.10 to list an auction with a thumbnail for a 10 day duration. As such, the nominal 10 cent listing fee is by no means excessive.
Sellers are reminded that the 10 cent listing fee will also provide up to one year's listing duration in the SuperStore. This is still the best value selling opportunity for slides in the world.

***Cancel bid capability removed from website***
Effective immediately, it is no longer possible to cancel bids placed on the AirlineHobby.com website.
We have had to remove the cancel bid capability from the website, due to abuse of the feature coupled with programming
considerations.
Bidders will have to exercise caution when placing bids. This means bidders will have to make sure the amount they are bidding is correct, as well as paying close attention to the seller's description of the item.
It is not physically possible for the webmaster to cancel bids, for any reason. So please be careful when bidding.
|
| Date: 10/16/2005 |
***New fully-automated invoice system***
A brand new fully-automated invoice system is now available, which allows AirlineHobby.com sellers to invoice their buyers with the click of a button!
Instead of manually composing and sending each buyer a request for payment email from your PC's email program, which takes a lot of time, sellers can now simply click on the new "Invoice your buyers" link in My Account.
When the page loads, simply click on any buyer's nickname and a fully automated invoice page opens, where a complete list of the buyer's recently purchased items are itemized and totaled.
The seller can add a personal message and specify postage fees. Don't forget to hit the "Recalculate" button each time you change the items on the invoice or change the postage amount. When the invoice is ready to send, simply hit the "Send Invoice" button at the bottom. It is as simple as that!
All sellers are strongly encouraged to use the new invoice system, which will save sellers much time, and present invoice information to buyers in an easy-to-understand and uniform format.
|
| Date: 09/06/2005 |
***New sales management tool for sellers***
A brand new sales management tool is now available for all sellers. Simply log into My Account and click on the new page titled "View your sold items with bidder contact info" to see the various reports that are now available.
Sellers can now view reports of all their sales data, including all the necessary buyer info (email, telephone and mailing address) for each auction. Reports are also available for current listings, showing current value of all bids, as well as totals. Of course all reports are easily copied into excel, so sellers can now easily maintain their own spread-sheets produced directly from the website's database records.
This new sales management page also allows sellers to search their own listings based on buyer's nickname, 9-digit item number, or key words contained in the item's title field.
The website database only maintains completed auction information for 90 days after the date of close. However, this new report system allows sellers to easily maintain their own, ongoing account archives.
Lastly, Stefan Fey (CV990), Ian and Dave (Afavia), and Marcel Drescher (Aviation Trade) all deserve a round of thanks, as they all made the recommendations to the webmaster that brought about these new features.
Other very useful features are currently in development. Hopefully everyone had a good summer, taking lots of slides! With the poor weather of Fall around the corner, it is time to start listing slides, as well as other non-slide collectibles!!

***Non-communicating and non-paying site members***
I would like to take this opportunity to advise all site members of a cooperative agreement that is in place to protect both slide collecting communities at AirlineHobby.com and AuctionTransportation.com from website members that are serious offenders of both websites' communication and payment policies, and other website policies.
The vast majority of the slide collecting communities on both websites do adhere to the strictly enforced communication and payment policies. The honesty and integrity of the website communities is what makes online slide trading safe and fun.
Although rare, from time to time there are situations where a bad-faith member of one website wins many slides, and keeps on bidding, but has stopped communicating and stopped paying for his slides. Many of these individuals will then go to the other site and engage in the same bad-faith behavior, which causes much frustration, irritation, and wasted time for the sellers, as well as much wasted time for the webmasters.
The same can be said for bad-faith sellers, where a seller will sell on one website, not pay their selling fees, then go to the other site and start fresh, and not pay their fees on the second website. This unacceptable behavior wastes everyone's time, and is not tolerated.
Such delinquent behavior will result in a lifetime ban on BOTH websites. It is paramount that we protect buyers and sellers on both sites, and we will take immediate action to stop any problem members from causing upset to either or both communities.
If someone is engaged in fraud or violates the rules on either site, or doesn't make fair restitution for slides bought or sold, that person will be banned for life from both websites.
Starting approximately one year ago, we have been working very closely with AuctionTransportation to make sure that bad-faith site members are removed from both of our respective systems in unison. This means if a site member engages in bad-faith behavior and his account is suspended on AirlineHobby, his account will also be simultaneously suspended on AuctionTransportation.
As a very polite reminder for all site members, the AirlineHobby.com communication and payment policies are as follows:
COMMUNICATION POLICY
Sellers and buyers must communicate with each other within seven days of auction close. Failure to communicate within seven days of auction close (by either party) constitutes a violation of website policy.
PAYMENT POLICY
All auctions must be paid for by buyers within 14 days of auction close. Failure to pay within 14 days of auction close constitutes a violation of website policy.
Our ultimate goal is to make your online slide trading experience as hassle-free as possible. The joint cooperation between both websites is a win-win situation for everyone.
If at any time you know of someone engaging in improper website behavior, please contact the webmaster with your concerns. This is a relatively small hobby, and many of us know each other by face or by name from meeting at conventions or at the airport. Let us all work together to remove problem members as quickly as possible, to make everyone's online slide collecting experience as best as it can be!

***Commission-Avoidance Policy Reminder***
At this time it is important to communicate to all site members the website’s strictly enforced policy on commission avoidance, which is listed as item 2 on the website’s User Agreement:
AirlineHobby.com Website User Agreement
The webmaster has recently been informed that a site member has been asking sellers to purchase slides listed on the website in circumvention of the website’s normal selling facilities. This buyer encouraged sellers to cancel their auctions (which had not yet received bids), and he would purchase the slides from the sellers at a reduced price. The buyer points out to the sellers that this would of course save them from having to pay any selling commissions. Apparently this has been an ongoing situation.
This buyer has been permanently removed from the website, and he is permanently blocked from re-joining.
Any internet-savvy person will understand that any website which relies on final value commissions for its revenues, cannot tolerate members that are engaged in any form of commission avoidance behavior. AirlineHobby.com is no different than any other commission-dependant website, and those users that are actively engaged in behavior which defrauds the website operator of entitled revenues, will be removed from the website with no second chances.
As such, please be advised that this website has a zero tolerance level for commission avoidance behavior. Any site member that engages in commission avoidance behavior will have their account permanently suspended on first offence.
What about slides and other items that remain un-sold after an auction or SuperStore listing expires? The seller is more than welcome to sell such items to whomever he wishes, and this is of no concern to the website. For more information on this policy, please visit this website's
Commission Avoidance Policy.

***Cancel Bid Policy Reminder***
There have been recent instances of some members canceling their bids on auctions.
As a polite reminder to all site members, all bids placed on the system are in fact binding contracts. As stated in the website's Cancel Bid Policy, there are only two exceptional circumstances when a bidder is permitted to cancel a bid:
1) The high bidder accidentally enters the wrong bid amount. For instance, a proxy bid of $888.00 is placed instead of $88.00 If this occurs, the bidder must re-enter the correct bid amount immediately after the first bid has been cancelled. If a correcting bid is not placed, the bid retraction will be in violation of AirlineHobby's policy and may result in account suspension.
2) The description of a slide bid on changed significantly as the seller made major amendments to the auction's description, or the seller told the bidder information that caused the bidder to change his/her perceived value of the slide.
Bids retracted with the purpose of determining a competing proxy bid's maximum value (or any other purpose) is a very serious violation of website policy, and may result in account suspension.
This policy is clearly stated in the website's Cancel Bid Policy page:
http://www.airlinehobby.com/help/cancelbid.cfm
If anyone has questions, concerns, or would like to report abuse of this policy, the webmaster is ready to assist.

***Lower fees for Military Slide Auctions***
For all military aircraft slide auction categories, the final value selling commission has been reduced from 10% down to 7%, effective immediately. Please see below for an additional SPECIAL OFFER for military slide sellers.
The fee reduction does not apply to SuperStore listings or any of the civil aircraft auctions categories.
This fee reduction has been implemented to encourage more business from military slide sellers that are listing on competing websites.
The AirlineHobby.com website offers considerably more features, particularly in the areas of user feedback, automated fee refunds, account management, automation of account payments, overall customer service, and the ability of each user to create a user-defined online store, at no cost.
The newly reduced final value fee will hopefully encourage more military slide sellers to use AirlineHobby.com as their one and only online presence for selling military aircraft slides.
As a reminder, only the AirlineHobby.com website provides military slide sellers with the ability to create their own online store, with user-defined categories. There is no cost to create an online store, and this is the perfect way to manage both your online military slide auctions, and military slide fixed-price listings. Fixed-price listings can be listed for durations up to one year.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR MILITARY AUCTION SELLERS:
For any military slide auction sellers that can guarantee ongoing listings of 150 slides per month, we are offering a FREE dedicated auction category. Simply contact the webmaster Henry Tenby at henry@airlinehobby.com as soon you are ready!
Please help spread this important news among the military slide seller community, and happy slide collecting!

***Seller's Stores/About Me/Proxy Bidding***
After nearly three months of development, four exciting new features are now available:
1) AirlineHobby Stores:
All AirlineHobby.com members can now create their own exclusive online store. Simply access the store set-up link within My Account (at the very bottom).
Within each member’s store, there is the ability to include an “About Us” section, as well as upload a logo. Most importantly, each member can also create their own user-defined categories within their own store.
Each store is assigned its own unique URL, so members can easily share their store link with friends and customers, and easily incorporate links to their store from other websites.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: It is necessary to list items in an AirlineHobby.com auction or SuperStore category in order to additionally list the item in a member’s user-defined store category. Listings cannot ONLY be posted to a member’s user-defined category within a store. Items posted in a member’s store do not get charged the $0.25 secondary category listing fee. (There are no listing fees for listing items in user-defined store catagories.)
Once a store is created, a “STORE” mini button will appear on all the seller’s website listings (beside the seller’s nickname). A click on this button takes viewers to the seller’s store. This site-wide feature automatically enables all sellers to cross-market website viewers to their stores.
Existing listings can be posted to a store by using the edit feature. On the edit page simply select the appropriate user-defined store caregory, and then click the save button at the bottom of the page.
2) About Me:
All AirlineHobby.com members now have their own html supported webpage to publish “About Me” information for everyone to see. Simply access the “About Me” set-up link within My Account (at the bottom of the page).
Each member can now tell everyone about their specific interests in the hobby, how they got started in the hobby, explain what they are collecting, and share hobby-related information with other site members. This page is html supported, so users who are familiar with html can create an “About Me” page designed to their own specific layout requirements, with links, images and photos. Those not familiar with webpage design and html can simply enter a text write-up.
Each user’s “About Me” page is assigned its own unique URL, so members can easily share this link with friends and customers, and easily incorporate links to their “About Me” page from other websites.
A “ME” mini button will appear beside a seller’s nickname (on all the seller’s website listings) so viewers can click on this button to view the seller’s “About Me” page.
3) Proxy Bidding Upgrade
All auction bids placed on the website are now processed as proxy bids. It is no longer possible to place a regular bid. This change was made to protect those not familiar with the difference between the two bidding formats from placing regular bids at high dollar amounts, when their intention was to place a safer proxy bid. Given the history of bidders making regular bids in error (where the bidder’s first language is often not English), the webmaster decided the easiest solution was to remove regular bidding from the website. The change to exclusive proxy bidding is for the protection of the bidding community at large.
4) Increasing Proxy Bid Amounts
High bidders can easily increase their proxy bids (if they wish) by simply placing another higher bid on the auction.
The system has been modified to recognize that the current high bidder is simply increasing a proxy bid, and the system will process the higher proxy bid without the bidder bidding against himself and raising the current bid price. (It is no longer necessary to cancel one’s existing proxy bid in order to place a higher proxy bid.)

***Selling Prints and Photos - Policy Update***
At the request of two site members, with hesitation, a new category has been added to the SuperStore for the fixed price listing of photographic prints. This is being conducted on a purely experimental basis.
All site members and prospective prints sellers should be aware of the following:
1) All photo listings must be listed in the "Photos and Prints" category within the SuperStore.
2) The Duplicate Slide listing policy has been amended and now applies to the listing of prints as well. As such, photo listings in the SuperStore must contain the word "PHOTO" "PRINT" or "PHOTOGRAPH" in the title line. Website policy has been amended as follows:
http://www.airlinehobby.com/welcome/safety.cfm
As stated above, this is being conducted on a purely experimental basis. If the listing of colour photos causes significant confusion and problems among the website community, the category and listings will be removed from the website.

***New Fixed Price Selling Categories***
Several new aviation collectible categories have been added to the SuperStore. Effective today, safety cards, models, books, printed matter and other aviation collectibles can be listed for fixed-price sale on the AirlineHobby.com SuperStore!
Our no cost ($0.00) listing fee offers a terrific savings compared to our biggest competitor, ebay. On ebay, it costs approximately $.50 USD to list a $5 item with a thumbnail photo, and the listing only remains active for 7 days. A 10 day listing for a $5 item (with thumbnail) will cost $.70 on ebay. We are offering truly terrific value by allowing listings to remain active for up to 1 year, and not charging a single penny for listing fees!
On AirlineHobby.com you only pay when the item sells. SuperStore listings can be posted for durations up to 1 year, and listings can contain single or multiple quantities. Perfect for listing those 25 Holidair DC8 safety cards retrieved from the dust bin 15 years ago! Ideal for listing those 10 copies of Propliner magazine #28 you were give in 1987. Or those 18 Mid Pacific YS11 safety cards "collected" on that memorable Honolulu-Maui flight back in 1987!
This is the perfect, cost-effective way to market your unsold aviation collectibles that are collecting dust and taking up valuable storage space. Start converting those old magazines, safety cards, books, models, decals, photos, videos, pins, and postcards to cash today!
We have recently heard that ebay has banned safety cards from being listed on their European websites. Similar action may follow soon for their US website. As a polite reminder, everyone is welcome and encouraged to list their safety cards on AirlineHobby.com!
We encourage everyone to start listing their surplus aviation collectibles for fixed price sale in the AirlineHobby.com SuperStore. List as much as you like... and remember the old saying ... "one person's junk is another person's gold!"

***New Features - Site Security & more***
We apologize for the site being down for a brief period today at 11:00 PST, however, this was necessary so that several new features could be added to the site. Here are the details, and all site members should read the following:
1) Website Security
We wanted to make sure that all AirlineHobby.com site members' account information (stored on our server) is secure and safe from hackers. As such, we have fully secured the AirlineHobby.com website using Geotrust.com, a leading global Certificate Authority that specializes in securing e-business transactions. Their patented smart seal technology provides fast and reliable website identity authentication. Look for the little gold lock on the lower right side of your browser when logging into My Account and other secure pages. This proves that the viewed pages are encrypted and protected with Geotrust's secure digital certificate.
2) User-initiated PayPal and Credit Card Fee payments
We have added a user-initiated PayPal and Credit Card payment system within My Account. Here are the details:
a) PayPal: Instead of having to go to the PayPal website and send a fee payment to fees@airlinehobby.com , sellers simply log into My Account, click on the "PayPal" link, and follow the easy steps to automatically pay their account fees. The new PayPal payment system immediately and automatically adjusts the seller's account to reflect the payment. Sellers will receive an emailed receipt for the PayPal payment within minutes of processing the transaction.
b)Credit Card: Instead of sending the webmaster an email asking to have one's fees charged to a credit card, sellers simply log into My Account, click on the "Credit Card" link, enter their card details into the secure page (which can be saved in our secure database for future payments), and follow the easy steps to automatically pay their account fees. The new credit card payment system immediately and automatically adjusts the seller's account to reflect the payment. Sellers will receive an emailed receipt for the credit card payment within minutes of processing the transaction.
3) New Invoice and Accounting System
We have introduced a new and much improved invoice and accounting system to track all sellers' sales and account payments/credits. The new system provides the seller with an up-to-date running tally of their account balance, which is updated with each and every invoice/credit/payment posted to their account. We transferred all site members' account balances from the old accounting system over to the new accounting system as of 11:00 AM PST, Friday, August 6, 2004.
Simply click on the "New Account History" button within My Account to view your account balance at any time. The transferred balance from the old system shows as "Previous Balance and Credit."
The "Old Account History" button will remain active in My Account for several weeks so that members can reference this information if required.
4) User initiated "Request a Refund of Commission Fees"
Sellers who have not been paid for their slides in accordance with the website rules, can now process a refund of commission fees back to their account using the new, automated "Request a Refund of Commission Fees" page within My Account. Simply enter the 9-digit number for auction or Slide SuperStore item that was not paid for, and the system will automatically process a refund of the commission fee amount back to the seller's account. Please note that featured listing fees, secondary category fees, home page listing fees, bold title fees and banner line fees are non-refundable. Only commission fees will be refunded if an item is not paid for. Requested refunds are recorded and monitored by the webmaster. Patterns of abuse by sellers or buyers will be investigated and dealt with accordingly.
5) Title Field increased from 55 to 65 characters
We have increased the Title field size from 55 characters up to 65 characters, for both auctions and Slide SuperStore listings. This means sellers can include a little more information in the Titles of their listings.
6) Refined FutureWatch
Some site members advised us that they were getting too many non-related FutureWatch emails. This was because the FutureWatch software read not only the listing's Title field, but also the description field. Many sellers would include additional information in their item descriptions, such as "I collect L188, Viscount and DC8 slides!" This would trigger FutureWatch notifications for "L188, Viscount and DC8" even though the listed slide was none of the above. The result was non-relevant FutureWatch emails to other site members. We have fixed this problem by refining the operation of the FutureWatch code. Effective immediately, FutureWatch only reads the main Title field. FutureWatch no longer reads the description fields of newly posted listings.

***New Features - Default Settings and more***
During the past 24 hours, we added several new features to the website that all site members should be aware of. All of these site improvements are in direct response to requests made by site users!
1) Default Settings for Sell Page and Bulk Loader:
Within My Account, we have added a Default Settings page where slide sellers can set auction listing default values or Slide SuperStore listing default values. These values are retained in the database, and can be edited at any time. The default settings page within My Account can then be used as a spring-board to quickly post listings via an automatically populated Sell Page or an automatically populated Bulk Loader. This saves sellers from having to waste time setting up all their Sell Page or Bulk Loader settings each time they wish to post listings!
2) Edit Address, Tel and Password within My Account:
Site members can now update/edit their address, telephone, email and password details within My Account. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to send an email to the webmaster asking that these changes be made.
3) Phone Numbers:
Buyer and seller telephone numbers are now provided along with the address details in the end-of-auction emails to buyers and sellers. We encourage buyers and sellers to try and resolve problems in person before sending a payment request, leaving negative feedback, or involving the webmaster. If it is not possible to contact another site member by email, then please attempt to contact the member by telephone. Payment request and negative feedback should only be used as a measure of last resort.
4)Single item auctions only:
A strategic decision was made to create a distinct separation between auctions and fixed-price slide sales. As such, the auction page has been hard-coded to allow single item auctions only. Multiple listing BuyNow sales can no longer be conducted using the auction format. Multiple listing BuyNows can of course be accommodated within the Slide SuperStore categories. This will make life easier for buyers and sellers alike! Everyone now knows that all fixed-price slide sales are found within the Slide SuperStore categories!
5) No more pennies in bid increments:
Effective today, it is no longer possible to introduce pennies/cents into the bidding system. Bids on all auctions can only be placed in $1 bid increments. (Existing auctions with pennies introduced in existing bids will not be effected by the bid coding change and will de-populate from the website in the next few weeks.) This does not mean sellers cannot list slides with a starting price of $2.50. In this example, the system will only allow bidders to bid $2.50, $3.50, $4.50, $5.50 etc. Bidders cannot bid $3.54, $4.54, $5.54 etc. as the bid value must be in full one dollar increments (with no additional pennies) above the starting bid price.
6) Feedback Page sort capability:
It is now possible to sort the Post Feedback page by auction title, nickname, and date.
7) Search by 1,2,3…7 days:
On the Search page, it is now possible to conduct word searches for listings posted within the past 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days (in addition to the non date-constrained full database searches).

***New Features - Bulk Re-List and more***
We have recently added a number of new features to the website, which should be of benefit to all site members. Here are the details:
Sell History Overhaul:
Auction management just got a whole lot easier! By clicking on the “View your selling history” link in My Account, sellers can now view separate result pages (which includes total numbers of listings) for the following:
1) Active auctions, 2) expired auctions sold, 3) expired auctions unsold
4) Active Slide SuperStore listings, 5) expired Slide SuperStore listings
Bulk Auction Re-List:
Sellers can now re-list expired auctions (sold or unsold) in bulk with the single click of a button! By clicking on the “View your selling history” link in My Account, sellers can view their completed auctions (sold or not sold) page by page, and a check-box beside each listing can allow for up to 50 expired auctions to be re-listed with one click of the button!
New Auction Search:
Users can now search for newly listed auctions that exclude the re-listed auctions. This feature is available on the home page and on the search page.
Auction Watch List:
Users can now remove auctions from the auction watch page.
We have removed active Slide Superstore slide purchases from appearing on the buyer’s bid history page (in response to many requests that this change be made).
Edit Auction Price:
Sellers can now edit the opening bid price of an auction using the edit auction feature (as long as there are no bids placed or the reserve price is not met).
New Feedback Sytem:
The new feedback system has been operating bug-free for the past few weeks. Each closed auction now generates a feedback report for both the buyer and the seller.
Euro conversion:
All site listings now show the current bid / BuyNow price in Euros (using the prevailing exchange rate). The site currency and all listings are still in $USD, but we are showing the conversion to Euros as promised.
Bid Retractions:
The Bid History page has been modified to capture all cancelled bids for everyone to see. Site members are reminded that bid cancellation is not permitted except in two special circumstances:
1) The bidder made a significant typing mistake (such as placing an $888.00 proxy bid instead of an $88.00 proxy bid). If this occurs, the bidder must re-enter the correct bid amount immediately after the first bid has been cancelled. If a correcting bid is not placed, the bid retraction will be in violation of AirlineHobby's policy.
2) The description of a slide bid on changed significantly as the seller made major amendments to the auction's description, or the seller told the bidder information that caused the bidder to change his/her perceived value of the slide.
As always, there are more improvements planned, which will be added to the site as soon as possible!

***New Holiday Notice Board and Forums***
In late March, our Forum and Notice Board provider closed the system on us with no notice, and all the messages were permanently lost.
This was a free service, and they simply closed it down because they were not making enough money on their ads. It goes to show that using a low cost service (of any nature) is often not the best choice! Discount pricing means discounted product and discounted service! We should have known better and apologize for this inconvenience.
We have now opened a new Forum and Holiday Notification Board with a paid service which will be permanent.
All members with active holiday notices are kindly asked to re-post on the new system. No nickname or password is required!

***New Feedback System is live on the site***
After many months of programming, we are pleased to announce that new feedback system is now live on the site and available for use.
The new system allows the buyer and seller of each auction and Slide SuperStore transaction to leave each other one feedback. This means if a buyer or seller has 122 transactions in the next 30 days, the system will allow for 122 feedbacks to be left and received.
Feedbacks can only be left and received for transactions that close from this point forward. Transactions that closed prior to this email (1200 PST MAR 22, 2004) could not be incorporated into the new system.
However, we were able to retain all feedback comments and numeric ratings from the old system where users referenced a 9-digit auction number with their feedbacks. The orphaned feedbacks (those that did not reference a 9-digit auction number) could not be retained, and for this reason almost all members have noticed that their feedback ratings have dropped during this transition process.
Most site users had between 50 and 100 feedback ratings prior to the switch-over. With the old system their rating was capped at this figure because feedbacks were not tied to specific auction transactions.
With the new system, the average site member that buys or sells 100-200 slides in the next few months will generate 100-200 feedbacks to leave and receive. Thus the short-term loss in feedback ratings during the transition to the new feedback system will be very quickly repaired.
The new feedback system is easily accessed within My Account.
|
| Date: 03/18/2004 |
***Feedback system upgrade - status update***
We are now in the process of switching from the old feedback system to the new feedback system. Over the past 24 hours we have had to make some back-end database changes.
Most site members will notice that their feedback number has dropped. This is because the new system cannot accomodate feedbacks that were left between users that did not include a 9-digit auction number (referenced in the feedback). These "orphan" feedbacks have had to be removed from the database, and hence everyone's feedback number has been reduced accordingly. Each member's newly revised feedback number will be rolled-over into the new system, and will be the starting point for each member's feedback account in the new system.
The good news is that in the new system, each auction will generate one feedback for both seller and buyer. Thus, site members will be able to start collecting and leaving feedbacks based on their upwards incrementing selling and buying volume.
Verbal feedback comments from the old system cannot be incorporated into the new feedback structure, as it is simply not possible due to the vastly different architectures of the two systems. However, users' feedbacks will populate quickly in the new system, so loss of the old comments data will not present a problem.
We hope to have the new feedback system available for use shortly, and email notice will be sent to all site members as soon as it is ready. During this transition period, site members are asked not to leave any new feedback.

***New Policy for Cancel Bid feature***
Cancel Bid Policy and Use:
Site members are reminded that all bids placed on the AirlineHobby website are legally binding. However, there
are two exceptional circumstances when a bidder is permitted to cancel a bid:
1) The high bidder accidentally enters the wrong bid amount. For instance, a proxy bid of $888.00 is placed instead
of $88.00 If this occurs, the bidder must re-enter the correct bid amount immediately after the first bid has been
cancelled. If a correcting bid is not placed, the bid retraction will be in violation of AirlineHobby's policy
and could result in account suspension.
2) The description of a slide bid on changed significantly as the seller made major
amendments to the auction's description, or the seller told the bidder information that caused the bidder to change
his/her perceived value of the slide.
All site members are hereby advised that the AirlineHobby database keeps track of the total number of
bid retractions made by each site member. We are making changes to the site so that cancel bid statistics
will be displayed in each and every site user's feedback profile. The cancel bid feature should not need
to be used more than a few times each year by any given site user, and excessive use will be investigated.
Bids retracted with the purpose of determining a competing proxy bid's maximum value is a very serious
violation of our policy! Such abuse will result in the suspension of a member's account on first occurrence.
Any site member that has a concern that the cancel bid feature has been used in violation of site policy is
asked to report the matter to us for investigation.

***Cancel Bid / Increase Bid - new features***
Two new features have been added to the website:
Cancel Bid feature
High bidders on active auctions can now cancel their bids by following the steps below.
Please note that high bids placed on Slide SuperStore listings and auctions that have closed cannot be cancelled.
1) log into My Account
2) Click on the "View your bidding history" link
3) Limit results to "active auctions" on the bidding results page
4) Click the "Cancel this bid" button beside desired auction(s)
Increase Bid Feature
An auction's high bidder can now increase his bid amount (proxy and regular bids) without bidding against himself.
Simply cancel the existing bid by following the steps above, and then place a new, higher bid.

| Date: 01/08/2004 |
***Delinquent/Cancelled Members***
In order to protect site members from irritation and financial loss, we have decided to maintain
an on-line list of delinquent AirlineHobby.com members that have violated website policy. These
individuals have been permanently banned from the site.
http://www.airlinehobby.com/welcome/blocked.cfm
The accounts belonging to these individuals listed on the above linked page have been cancelled due
to one or more of the following reasons:
1) they did not pay for slide auctions which they won
2) they did not send slides to purchasers that paid for slides
3) they did not pay their website commission fees
We have blocked these individuals' email addresses from re-joining the website. However, it is possible
that some people may have re-joined the website using alternate email addresses or false names.
All active members are kindly asked to be on-watch and advise us immediately if any of these individuals
participate in any way on the website, as their participation is in strict violation of website policy.
In closing, we wish to reiterate that we do not want site members to incur further losses in dealing
with these individuals, and our first and foremost desire is to protect our members' best interests.

***site down - what happened!***
The AirlineHobby.com website is back in service after being down for nearly 15 hours. Here's what happened.
At 2200 PST on Monday night, thieves attempted to break into the building where our ISP (Internet Service
Provider) is located, along with several other businesses. In an attempt to disable the alarms, the thieves
used a saw to cut all the power, internet, cable and telephone lines from the building. This immediately
sounded the alarms, and the thieves were scared away.
The cut power and communication lines resulted in all of our ISP's customers being cut-off from the
internet. The telephone and cable companies were on the scene at 0800 this morning and were able to
restore service at approximately 1400 PST, after a 15 hour downtime.
A number of AirlineHobby auctions closed during this downtime, without members being able to place last-minute
bids. We are not able to un-do closed auctions. However, sellers whose auctions were effected by the service
disruption are more than welcome to re-list any auction(s).
Simply send the webmaster an email with the total dollar amount of commissions invoiced for the auction(s)
that will be re-listed, and the total commission amount will be credited in-full back to sellers' accounts.
Do not forget to advise the interested bidders if auctions are going to be re-listed.
This was a very extraordinary occurrence and was well beyond our control, and was the first ever such
occurrence of this nature for our ISP! Hopefully this will never happen again!
We are very sorry it happened and offer our sincere apologies for those that were inconvenienced by this
disruption.
Lastly, I hope everyone has enjoyed using the website and the improvements that have been made over the past
year. More upgrades are in works for completion soon, and I would like to offer everyone all the very best for
the Holiday Season and New Year! Happy slide collecting!

***New Mailing Address***
Effective immediately, the new mailing address for the webmaster and all AirlineHobby.com
related business is as follows:
AirlineHobby.com
5220 Dunbar Street
Vancouver, BC
Canada V6N 1V9
Mail sent to the old address will be forwarded for 90 days. Please update your records accordingly.
|
| Date: 08/21/2003 |
***BuyNow + Mailing Address Notices***
BuyNow Notice:
The recent site upgrade has resulted in a slight change in the functionality of the BuyNow
feature. As such, the BuyNow feature requires that the BuyNow price be at least $.01 (1 cent)
higher in value than the Minimum Bid price when posting listings on the Sell page. Setting the
same value for the BuyNow price as the Minimum Bid price will result in the BuyNow feature not
being activated. As long as no bids have been placed, sellers can change a BuyNow price by
using the Edit feature.
Mailing Address Notice
Effective immediately, buyers and sellers will receive the complete mailing address of the
respective buyer/seller in the end of auction (and BuyNow) emails sent out by the system.
This will hopefully lessen some of the address interpretation problems encountered by some
site members. As such, please insure that your mailing address is accurate and complete as
contained in your AirlineHobby.com account. Changes/corrections should be sent to the webmaster
for update.

***Slide SuperStore Launch***
After several months in development, we are pleased to announce the launch of the
Slide SuperStore. This new section of the website offers fixed-price slide sales
with online listing durations up to one year!
Military Aircraft Slide SuperStore
Civil Aircraft Slide SuperStore
Have you ever shot a roll or two of a particular aircraft that none of the slide
services were interested in purchasing, and you were stuck with many unsold
slides? We've all made this mistake. Maybe you have been shooting slides in
quantity for many years and have thousands of spare slides, with many spares
of the same shot. Perhaps the slides aren't quite rare enough to auction off,
yet you have been looking for a simple, easy to use venue where you could
start selling your slides to other collectors.
We have attempted to address these needs: The Slide SuperStore allows for a
single slide or multiple quantities of a slide to be listed (between 30 days
and 1 year) for fixed-price sale on the AirlineHobby website. This is the perfect
solution for private slide sellers and large volume, retail slide sellers alike!
With multiple quantity slide listings, results to buyer and seller emails are sent
out with each slide purchase (along with a seperate invoice to the seller with
each sale). Using the edit feature, at any time during the listing period, sellers
can change the quantity of slides available (increase or decrease), as well as
change the sale price.
As a LIMITED TIME SPECIAL OFFER (valid through SEP 08 2003), you can launch your
own Slide SuperStore exclusive selling category for only $100 for a 1 year period
ending AUG 31 2004. This special offer is for new Slide SuperStore exclusive categories
only, and does not apply to regular auction exclusive categories, where existing
pricing remains in effect. (Existing regular auction exclusive category owners are
entitled to complimentary Slide SuperStore categories on request.) Advance payment
of the $100 fee is required (PayPal or credit card).

***Edit/Cancel Auction - new features***
Sellers can now cancel their own auctions by simply logging into My Account and
clicking on the "Cancel Auction Early" link. It is no longer necessary to send
the 9-digit numbers to the webmaster.
Also, a new "edit auction" button appears at the top of auction pages when a
seller is logged into the system and viewing their own auctions. This makes
editting auctions even easier!

***Block Bidder/Edit Auction/Login-Logout Upgrades***
This past week several new features were added to the website:
Bulk Loader
Within My Account, the new Bulk Loader allows sellers to list large numbers of
slides very rapidly. All large volume sellers are encouraged to look at this
time saving feature!
Block Bidder
Sellers can now block bidders from bidding on their auctions using the new Block
Bidder page, accessed in My Account. Site users with a history of slow payment or
poor communication should be aware that sellers can now block their bids!
Blocked Bidder List
All users that are blocked are presented for all to see on the new
Blocked Bidder List.
The Blocked Bidder List
also shows the nickname of the blocking seller(s). This will allow everyone to see emerging
patterns of poor performance, and will hopefully encourage the blocked bidders to rectify
their problems.
Edit Auction
Sellers can now make the following changes to their auctions on the Edit Auction
page within My Account:
1) change image
2) edit auction title
3) change auction category
Login-Logout Module
A new time-saving login-logout module has been added to the website. When logged in,
users no longer need to enter their nickname and password when performing all site functions (bidding,
listing slides etc).
Important Note:
In order for the login-logout module to work properly, PC browser settings must
be enabled to accept cookies with medium or lower security.
Users who experience problems should follow these steps:
1) in browser select Tools / Internet Options / General tab
2) delete all temporary internet files
3) delete all cookies
4) select the Privacy tab within Internet Options
3) reduce privacy to medium (or lower)
4) click Apply/OK tab
5) re-boot computer

***Auction Relist Upgrade***
This week we completed two significant upgrades to the website.
1) Relist Completed Auction
A "Relist This Item" button now appears at the top of all expired auctions.
Clicking this button automatically launches a new Sell Page that is pre-populated
with all the details and images from the completed auction. Of course any field
can be changed (except images) and the relisted auction can be posted with two
simple clicks of the mouse! Be careful not to relist auctions that were initially
set to relist automatically... to avoid double listings.
2) Behind the Scenes Image Management Upgrade
With nearly 30,000 auction images being posted to the website each month, the
level of image reliability was becoming compromised. Although rare, there were
incidents of images being mixed-up on the system. We have made significant behind
the scenes upgrades to the image management system and do not expect any further
image problems.
In the coming weeks we have several other site upgrades planned (in response to
requests made by members) and they will be announced on completion.
|
| Date: 05/13/2003 |
***User Code of Conduct - Reminder Notice***
All members should be aware of the website's User Code of Conduct, and should take a few
minutes to read the rules now:
http://www.airlinehobby.com/welcome/safety.cfm
From time to time, users send emails complaining that they have acquired slides on the website
that have problems that were not noted in the auction listing.
Specifically, people complain to the webmaster when:
a) slides are not kodachrome originals (and this was not noted in the auction)
b) slides have damage, processing marks, scratches etc. (and this was not noted in
the auction).
c) other members are slow to communicate and slow to pay
The Safe Harbor - User Code of Conduct explicitly sets out the rules of the website. In summary:
a) If a slide is not a kodachrome original, the auction listing must contain this
information for bidders to see.
b) If a slide is damaged, the auction listing must contain this information for
bidders to see.
c) Auction winners and sellers must communicate within 7 days of auction close,
and the winner must pay within 14 days of auction close.
What happens when a seller gets a slide that is defective for reasons not explained
in the listing? The buyer should follow these steps:
1) Tell the seller the slide is being returned and ask for a refund.
2) Leave negative feedback
3) If the seller will not refund the buyer's money, please contact us and
we will assist in resloving the matter.
If a member is slow to communicate and/or slow to pay, leave them negative feedback.
Serious violations should be brought to our attention.
The feedback system allows all of us to monitor the pattern of behavior for all site
members. If a negative pattern emerges for a certain member, we can then take corrective
action based on hard facts.
The vast majority of site users are honest and conduct their website activities within
the rules. And some people simply are not as well organized as others, but are still honest.
If we can all be aware of the User Code of Conduct and try to comply as best we can, this
will benefit all of our online trading experiences.

***Mailing Address/Payment Instructions Notice***
A number of site members are not aware of two recently added, time-saving features of the website.
Sellers can include their mailing address in the congratulations email sent to auction winners.
Simply select the check-box at the bottom of the Sell Page that says:
NEW!! Include mailing address in winning bidder email
Also, sellers can send winners detailed payment instructions in the same end of auction
congratulations email. Simply enter the text in the Payment Instructions field, also on
the Sell Page.
Many slide sellers are not making use of these time saving features. As a result, the seller
has to send the winner a seperate email asking for payment, while the auction winner must
wait for this information. Much time is wasted if these features are not employed.
All sellers are keenly encouraged to make use of these features.

***Lost Payment and Slide Notice***
It is apparent that the vast majority of incidents of lost slides and lost payments
in the mail is easily explained by careless action of members.
For example, in the past few weeks, I have personally received:
1) A letter containing cash that was incorrectly addressed, which I found
in the lobby of our building. It was delivered to the wrong suite number
and the occupant dumped the letter in the lobby for return to the Post Office.
2) The letter referenced above contained NO RETURN ADDRESS!!!!! Therefore, had
I not found the letter it would have been destroyed by the Post Office, and
the sender would be complaining to me that he sent the money! In actuality,
this loss would have been entirely the fault and responsibility of the
careless sender.
3) Numerous letters are received with addresses written in a barely legible
scrible. This makes it difficult for the Post Office to decipher to which address
the letter is to be delivered, and it makes it extremely difficult for the seller
to determine the correct mailing address to send the slide to. Again, this
carelessness results in payments and slides getting lost, and it is entirely
the fault of the buyer.
4) Numerous letters are received with cash in an envelope with no reference
to the slide(s) for which payment is sent. This makes it extremely difficult
and time consuming to find the right slide to send to the buyer.
The above examples support the website policy of placing all risk of loss
(payment to seller, and slide to buyer) with the buyer. If the buyer does not
address his payment properly it gets lost, at buyer's risk. And if the buyer
provides an illegible address and the slide does not get delivered, this too
is at buyer's risk.
To minimize these unpleasant occurences, all AirlineHobby members are strongly
urged to follow the following basic guidelines when sending payment to sellers
for slides they have won:
1) Address and return address must be neetly PRINTED (not written). I
repeat, it must be neetly PRINTED so it can be easily read without the
chance for error on the part of the Post Office or the recipient.
2) Envelope must contain a return address... without exception!!!
3) Sender should include the details of the slides for which payment
is being sent. Print the email confirmation received from AirlineHobby
and send it to the seller as this will insure the seller sends the
correct slide(s).
If everyone can follow the above guidelines, we will all experience a
much smoother online trading experience.

***Duplicate Slide Policy***
It is important to remind all site members of the website's duplicate slide policy.
Sellers are required to include the word "duplicate" or "dupe" in the main title field when
listing duplicate slides for auction.

***New Listings Here feature***
There is one additional new feature that was added last week, that was not
explained in the email sent out on Friday.
If an auction (or auctions) have been posted to a category within the past
24 hours, the words "New Listings Here" will appear
beside the category name on the Listings page.
Users can quicky and easily see where new auctions have been posted to the website
in the past 24 hours.
For more details please see the New Features page.

***New Features - Payment Instructions***
It is now possible for sellers to send their mailing address, and custom payment
instructions to auction winners in the end-of-auction "congratulations" email
that is automatically sent out by the system. Here are the details...
On the Sell Page, we have added a new text box (titled "Payment Instructions")
in which sellers can include their own custom message for the winner. This
payment instruction message would otherwise have to be manually sent to the
winner by way of seperate email after the auction closes.
Also, at the bottom of the Sell page, there is a new check box where sellers
can select to have the system include their complete mailing address along
with the "congratulations" results email to auction winners.
Custom message and address information is also sent to "BuyNow" customers.
It is very important that sellers make sure their addresses are current
and accurate in our database. Otherwise winners will send payment to the
wrong address!
Auction winners should now pay close attention and read end-of-auction
"congratulations" emails and "BuyNow successful" emails very carefully.
Effective today, many sellers will be providing specific payment instructions
and their mailing address.
These new features will hopefully benefit everyone, particularly high-volume sellers.
For more details please see the New Features page.

***New Features - Watch, Searches***
Over the past week we have added some new features to the website:
1) Auction Watch
Just click on the "watch" link which now appears on all auctions to add desired
auctions to your "watch" page. By logging into My Account, you can then access
the "watch" page which presents all the auctions you would like to keep close
watch of ... all in one convenient place. Selected auctions remain on the watch
page until auction expirey.
2) New Search Buttons
We have re-designed the "new auction" and "ending soon" search buttons to
allow seperate searches of the Civil and Military auctions, for 24H, 48H
and 72H time periods.
3) Account Balance
You can view your account balance simply by logging into My Account. It is
no longer necessary to run a detailed account inquirey to retrieve account
balances.
4) Private Auctions
All auctions posted on the website are now private. Seller and high bidder
nicknames presented on any given auction are now Nickname and Password protected.
In order to send an email to the seller/high bidder, simply click on the seller/high
bidder nickname, enter your nickname and password, and our system will send your
email message for you. This change was made to protect user's email addresses from
being archived by spam engines, and to prevent unsolicited communications from
people outside the AirlineHobby community.
For more details please see the New Features page.

***current auction Front Page relisting fees***
Several people have sent emails asking if Front Page relist auctions set prior to
today will be charged the new $1 Front Page fee.
Today at 1445 PST (Jan 09, 2003), the database was re-set whereby the auction-relist
for all auctions on the system was changed to 0. This means if a user selected a
relist value of 1, 2 or 3 prior to 1445 PST today, all such current auctions WILL
NOT BE RELISTED if they do not sell.
For all new auctions posted after 1445 PST today, relist values of 1, 2 or 3 will be
processed accordingly. Therefore, an auction relist value of 3, in combination
with the Front Page listing selected, will result in Front Page listing fees
totalling $3 if the item relists 3 times.
This was the only we were able to prevent users from being charged the $1 Front
Page listing fees which come into effect today, as detailed in the previous email
(see below).
There may be a few auctions that closed while the database changes were in work,
and were inadvertantly charged the $1 Front Page fee. Simply send an email and
we will be happy to make the necessary adjustments to the effected accounts.

***Front Page Listings for HOT RARE slides***
We have created a very special, new venue for sellers with special slides (hot new,
golden oldies, mega-rare) to showcase their auctions with prime exposure in their
own category, right on the website home page.
As such, the home page has been re-designed to present thumbnail images for
these very special auctions posted in the new Front Page listing category.
Effective immediately, there will be a $1 fee for sellers that would like for
their auctions to be posted in the new Front Page listing category. Auctions
will also continue to appear in the standard listing categories as selected
on the auction Sell Page. The Front Page listing category simply provides
added exclusive exposure for a nominal $1 fee.
The home page will present a rolling marquee of the most current 14 Front
Page auctions at any given time, with the older Front Page listings presented
in their own special pages accessed from the link at the bottom of the
home page.
Several site members offered this suggestion as a way to create a new area of
added excitement. It had been often pointed out that the old format of free
listings on the home page was of little value or interest because they were
available to everyone, at no cost.
We have several other new features in the works, including the ability to
track auctions of potential interest. Happy collecting!

***Clint Groves ATP Vintage Slide collection***
We are very pleased to welcome Clint Groves and his massive ATP Slide collection
to the website. Clint has amassed more than 200,000 original kodachrome aircraft
slides, many of which date from the 1950s and 1960s, and some from the 40s,
all of which will be auctioned on the website in the months ahead.
Clint assembled this incredible slide collection over the last 38 years, which
formed the basis of his slide duplicating business, ATP, which was based in
San Jose up until very recently. Clint has now reached retirement and is selling
off the slides to fund his retirement years.
Some AirlineHobby members have contacted Clint asking to purchase slides in
circumvention of the website at lower prices. This is unfair to Clint and we
ask that people refrain from making requests of this nature.
Clint's collection contains almost every airliner and registration in existence
since the 1950s. Members are encouraged to ask Clint to list specific aircraft
for auction if they have special wishes, and Clint will happily comply, provided
he has the slide. For those of you that have an ATP Slide catalog, simply send
Clint the slide's number and Clint will list the original slide for auction on
the website. Clint will also be listing his extensive railroad slide collection
on our sister website www.slidetrader.com
Clint can be reached at clintgroves@yahoo.com
and his airliner slide auction category is just a click away:

***Sunday Morning Server Problem***
Early Sunday morning the AirlineHobby.com server for reasons unknown went to
100% capacity, which essentially froze the website for a 2-3 hour period. Our
new ISP Manager will hopefully monitor the server more closely to prevent future
occurrences. Members are encouraged to report server problems if and when they
occur in the future, so we can try to identify the cause.
Moving a website of this complexity is not easy, and the hope is that the new
dedicated server will prove to be more stable in the long run (than the old
shared server).
Several people reported that they were prevented from placing last minute
bids on closing auctions posted by "otter" (Anthony Hickey). In all fairness
given this situation, it is best to give everyone a proper chance to bid. As
such, Mr. Hickey was asked if he could relist the 2 or 3 auctions that were effected,
and he has complied.
If there any other sellers whose auctions were effected early Sunday
morning, we will be happy to refund commissions so that the auctions
can be relisted. Just send the 9-digit auction numbers and commission credits
will be issued.
Problems like this are viewed as an extremely serious matter, and all members
should be aware that the webmaster is doing all that is possible to solve the
problem. Thank you for your continued understanding.

***Home Page Connection Failure - Solution***
For reasons that the software people cannot explain (yet), the home page cashe
file becomes corrupted and this blocks access to the home page, until we can
manually reset the cashe file.
The cashe software can go months without a single problem, and then we can have
problems every few hours for an entire week! When this happens, the browser will
display a "connection failure" type of error message when trying to access
the home page.
When this happens the rest of the website is still fully functioning. As a backdoor
entrance to the website, it is suggested that users add the following web page
to their Favourites list:
www.airlinehobby.com/listings/categories/index.cfm

***European Mail Theft - Safety Tip***
There have been a number of recent reports of mail tampering, and theft of cash
sent through the mail. Every case received thus far reports a European country
as either the origin or destination of the letter, with Germany, Italy and France
being particularly bad. There has not been a single report of mail tampering/theft
in intra-North American mail shipments.
The purpose of this email is provide site users with explicit packaging instructions
to help minimize mail thefts. As PayPal charges high fees, many site members
prefer to risk sending cash through the mails, although this practice is not endorsed
by AirlineHobby.com. Please remember, website rules clearly state that cash sent
via the postal service is done entirely at the sender's risk. Money orders are
recommended for amounts greater than nominal value.
Many people send cash in an envelope without providing extra security. It is not good
enough to stapple the envelope shut and expect the envelope to be thief-proof. For example,
a 120mm X 170mm envelope with an adhesive sealing flap cannot be secured by stappling the
flap. The flap can be opened by a thief in 2 seconds and the staples are 100% useless.
SOLUTION: It is necessary that the flap of the envelope must be sealed with 50mm wide
clear packaging tape, which should be wrapped completely around the envelope forming
an unopenable seal. This tape is very strong and if wrapped completely around the envelope,
it is very difficult for a thief to open the letter quickly. As a matter of fact, it is a
hassle to open the envelope! And this means the thief will concentrate on other envlopes
that are easy to open and ignore the safely secured envelopes.
If everyone follows the above packaging guidline, it will help reduce future occurences of
mail theft and tampering.

***Exavia Vintage Auctions - Revised Policy***
Effective immediately, Exavia will no longer be using proxy accounts to process
offline bids received from their offline slide customers for Exavia Vintage (and
Milpix Vintage) slide auctions posted on the website.
All of Exavia's offline Vintage auctions will now be posted on the website
with the opening bid value representing the maximum offline bid received. This
way, online bidders need not worry about being outbid by offline bidders. All of
Exavia's offline proxy accounts have been dissabled.
This enables Exavia to solicit bids from their offline customers by published cut-off
dates, and then the auctions are posted on the AirlineHobby.com website so that
online bidders can place bids of they like. This is a win-win for everyone.

***Listing Fees and Auction Deletions***
Several people have requested that auction listing fees (secodary category fees,
bold title fees, featured auction fees etc.) be creditted back to their account
when they ask for auctions to be deleted.
Deleting auctions is very labour intensive as it takes one minute per deletion.
It is not uncommon for people to request from several up to 20 or 40 deletions at a time.
As such, please be aware that any listing fees charged by the system will not be
creditted back to a seller's account when a delete auction request is made.
The goal is to dissuade people from making auction deletion requests. This small penalty
will hopefully encourage people to be more careful with their listings in the future.
As a reminder, by selecting an auto re-list of two times, the system will invoice all
appropriate listing fees (secondary category, featured auction, bold title etc) two times
as well.

***Holiday Notification Board - NEW***
As we enter into the busiest holiday month of the year, site members are
encouraged to advise website trading partners of their upcoming holiday
dates using the new Holiday Notification Board. Here is the link:
http://pub40.ezboard.com/bairlinehobbyforum
Before sending an email to the webmaster asking why someone has not responded to emails
in a timely fashion, please first check the Holiday Notice Board for information.
In many cases people are on holidays, and up until now, there has not been a venue
for this information to be shared with other website members.
Login and password are NOT REQUIRED to post a notice on the Holiday Notification
Board. Holiday notices should include your system nickname, your real name, as well
as dates of travel.

***Lost payments in mail continues***
The amount of lost letters containing cash payments sent via the mail is increasing
significantly.
In the last month I have had no less than ten reports of lost/delayed/tampered
payments from France, Italy and Germany.
Again, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all AirlineHobby.com members waste no time
in joining PayPal. All members in Italy, France and Germany are STRONGLY
ENCOURAGED to join PayPal now.
PayPal is an online bank account that allows people to send instant payment
via the internet, to any other PayPal member. It costs nothing to join
PayPal, and all they charge is 2.5% commission to receive payments, which is
usually less than the cost of a postage stamp! And it protects buyers from
the increasing risk of loss when sending cash through the mails. And it
saves valuable time!
To join PayPal right now, click here:
https://www.paypal.com/refer/pal=5AV6398B6WC7U
I am very seriously considering making it a mandatory web site requirement
for all AirlineHobby.com members due to the drastic increase in reports
of lost money in the mails. Please remember that it is the buyer's responsibility
to get the payment to the seller. If the payment does not arrive in reasonable
time (2 weeks from date of mailing), then the buyer will have to send a
replacement payment at his expense. Sending large sums of cash is extremely
risky, not recommended, and done entirely at the buyer's risk!
To avoid al these hassles PLEASE JOIN PAYPAL!!!

***Exavia Vintage Auctions Notice***
Exavia Vintage was added to the web site very recently, and we will be adding a new
military category called Milpix Vintage. Both Exavia and Milpix are slide services
operated by established slide seller Martin Hornlimann, and I believe a detailed
explination is in order as to how these categories will be operated during the initial,
experimental period.
For over 10 years, Mr. Hornlimann has operated regular offline auctions of civil and
military slides. We felt that it would be benefitial to AirlineHobby members if we
could encourage Mr. Hornlimann to bring his offline auctions to the web site.
In order to do this, we had to address the fact that a number of Mr. Hornlimann's
offline bidders do no have internet access. These collectors place their bids via
snail mail and/or fax. Therefore, 16 new accounts were created so that
Mr. Hornlimann could place bids on behalf of his offline bidders, with the
explicit understanding that these bids would only be placed on Exavia Vintage and
Milpix Vintage category listings.
It was also agreed that Mr. Hornlimann would place offline bids as regular
bids, not proxy bids. This means, if an offline bidder bids $50 for a slide, the
bid will be placed at its full $50 bid amount, even though the next lowest online
bid is only at $22, for example. Mr. Hornlimann did not wish to give up auction
revenue by virtue of moving the auction to an online environment.
So everyone is aware, the 16 new accounts are as follows:
Robert Smith (nn rsmith)
Tetsuya Futasugi (nn tfutasugi)
A. Hirzel (nn ahirzel)
K. KAZUTOSHI (nn kazutoshi)
C. PONTILLO (nn pontillo)
THOMAS FANIS (nn fanis)
MARCEL DRESCHER (nn marcel)
GARY ORLANDO (nn garyo)
S. JEAN (nn sjean)
RUBEN HUSBERG (nn rubennor)
COLIN BALLANTINE (nn colinuk)
HOLGER SCHMIDT (nn holgers)
O. TAKASHI (nn takashi)
K. STICKER (nn sticker)
MICHAEL ING (nn ming)
STEVEN PINNOW (nn stevenp)
Additional offline bidders might be added to this list as required. Several of
the names above already have their own AirlineHobby.com accounts. If this is
the case for you, please be careful not bid against yourself should you decide
to send in offline bids. Please remember that it is completely impossible to
cancel bids once placed into the database.
This special arrangement is being evaluated on a temporary basis. If you are
not comfortable the fact that Mr. Hornlimann will be placing non-proxy
bids on behalf of his offline customers, then you should not bid on auctions
within the Exavia Vintage or Milpix Vintage categories. The regular Exavia
and regular Milpix auction listings are not effected by this situation.
The auction category is always visible at the very top center of each
auction's listing page.
Your comments (both positive and negative) are always welcomed.

***Hit Counter + other site improvements***
Yesterday we implemented a number of improvements to the web site, several of
which were requested by a number of users.
These improvements were implimented throughout the day, and there were periods
when the site was down or bidding was not possible. The site is now fully
functioning with the following new features:
Hit Counter
All auctions posted to the site now automatically have a hit counter.
The counter records one visit per person (per unique IP address) each 24 hour period.
View Other Auctions By Seller
We now have multiple page links (1 2 3 4 5 6 etc.) at the top and bottom of
each page (with 50 listings per page). These page links provide easier
navigation and replaced a "Next" button.

***Excessive Sized Images Deleted***
There are still a number of people who are uploading images that far exceed
the 100K maximum image size allowed.
There were 125 main auction images that have just been deleted from the system
that were 300K and larger. This will explain why some auctions will not have main images.
All sellers are reminded that the maximum image upload size is 100K. All images that
grossly exceed this size will be removed from the database which is
checked on a regular basis.
This rule has to be strictly enforced as the increased web hosting fees are
considerable. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this regard.
